TURNER, George

No.5829975, Private, George TURNER
Aged 24

4th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died in Captivity on Thursday, 7th October 1943

George Turner was born in 1919 in Dalham (Newmarket Q3-1919 3B:638) son of George William and Emma TURNER (née BRIGGS) of Dalham.

None have been identified in the 1939 register.

George was captured on Sunday 15th February 1942 when the British surrendered Singapore to the Japanese. He was in HQ Conpany.
Put to work on the Burma-Siam railway, he died at Nikki Camp (Ni Thea) 133 kilometres south of Thanbyuzayat, the northern terminus. This was where the northern and southern work gangs eventually met in November 1943, the railway actually starting operations in December. He seems to have survived the cholera epidemic there in May/June 1943 and so far no record has been found as to his cause of death.
